Beginning at
6 months of age or younger, Asbury Police Mounts are trained to
go over, under, and through a great variety of obstacles. The
horses are challenged to step up, down, into, and over different
surfaces to desensitize to footing change. This obstacle work
is done with boards, tarps, tires, mattresses, ramps, platforms,
stairs, and etc. Our horses will walk under tarps, tents, tassels,
or other obstacles that are over their heads. Our horses are trained
to trust the handler even in these frightening situations. The
horses are asked to go through flags, stacked barrels, open and
close gates, side pass cones, and much more without hesitation.
Obstacle training starts with the Ground Work and continues through
all riding training. Obstacles are a fun and creative way to train
horses to approach a variety of situations without spooking.
