Ground Work

The weanlings have very little human contact before they arrive at our facility. In our first stage of training, we teach the colts to trust the trainers through a variety of desensitizing techniques. Once a foundation of trust is established, the colt is taught to lead calmly, gound tie and stand for the farrier. This stage of training includes exposure to basic obstacles like trash bags, tarps umbrellas and simple platforms. Our second stage of training focuses on sensitizing the colts to specific cues. We use constant and rhythmic pressure to teach colts how to bend softly with lateral flexation, back, and yield to pressure at the shoulder and hip. As yearlings, we use lunging and ground driving to teach independence and confidence. In our third stage of training, along wih ground driving, we begin working on street training and more advanced obstacle work.
